On Stranger Tides

Last week I bought the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides OPI Nail Polish collection.
The colors are (From left to right): Mermaid's Tears, Steady as She Rose, Sparrow Me the Drama, Skull & Glossbones, Stranger Tides, and Planks A Lot.

My co-worker K says I'm addicted to nail polish. This is the only time I've bought a collection like this. I painted my nails with the Sparrow Me the Drama on Saturday, I love this color.

I also bought the shatter and I will try that out in the next couple of days and show you what that looks like! I was kind of surprised when I heard about this collection, and then saw that they were pastels. But I absolutely love the colors!

Feeling Me

Photobucket

So the last time I participated in Mental Health Monday, I talked about my anxiety.

This past week I haven’t taken my medicine, mainly because I forgot. I had renewed my prescription, but it never made it to the bathroom, so I didn’t remember to take it while getting ready for work.

I haven’t had any anxiety problems in a long time so I didn’t think not taking it would matter. Then I started feeling weird about Thursday. I was waking up feeling exhausted. Saturday, all I wanted to do was sleep. I went to the gym on Thursday, but didn’t really do much. I started on a machine and after a couple of minutes didn’t want to do it. So I went to another machine, after a couple of minutes, was sick of it. So I decided to do weights, did a couple exercises in that and didn’t feel like continuing. So I decided to get on a stationary bike and read while waiting for Yoga. After a couple of minutes was sick of that and decided to go home instead.

My fiancé made a comment that I deemed depressed. I didn’t feel depressed just tired. Though, it did prevent me from doing things I like to do, like working out and yoga. So I took my medicine and looked up withdrawal symptoms online, and sure enough they matched. After resting for a little bit, I started to feel better and like myself again.

I’m terrified of becoming addicted to anything. In college I was on Lexapro for a while then my friend psyched me out about becoming addicted to it I stopped taking it.  These withdrawal symptoms scare me, I don’t want to have to be on medication forever. I will talk to my doctor about it at my next appointment.

It’s like my professor once said, “I wouldn’t want to be addicted to something I have to have first thing in the morning and last thing before going to bed.” Now, he was talking about cigarettes, but that’s how I feel about anything. I never want to be dependent on a substance. Anytime I think I might be, I cut myself off from it.

Genuine Ken

ken-anniversary__oPt

So last night, I was browsing Hulu for something to watch, when I came across Genuine Ken. I love bad reality tv.

So this is show started with 8 men, competing to be Barbie’s Ken, The Great American Boyfriend.

The first challenge was a talent show. And really they didn’t have very much talent. Other challenges included surfing, running errands for Barbie, fashion challenge, and demonstrating their romantic side.

small_Genuine_Ken_Premieres

I loved when they announced the challenge for running errands for Barbie. The Hills chick (I don’t know or care her name) and another chick, had breakfast with the guys. One of the guys said he expected the challenge to be to ask the one woman on a date and so was looking for an opening to ask her out instead of listening to the other lady talk about Barbie’s life.

My favorite was Chris, who made it to the final two. I haven’t watched the last episode yet, but don’t think he won.

How can a society that exists on instant mashed potatoes, packaged cake mixes,
frozen dinners, and instant cameras teach patience to its young?

Patience is something you admire in the driver behind you and scorn in the one ahead.
~Mac McCleary

Have patience with all things, but chiefly have patience with yourself. Do not lose courage in considering your own imperfections but instantly set about remedying them -- every day begin the task anew.

If you begin to understand what you are without trying to change it, then what you are undergoes a transformation.
- Jiddu Krishnamurti

Making your mark on the world is hard. If it were easy, everybody would do it. But it's not. It takes patience, it takes commitment, and it comes with plenty of failure along the way. The real test is not whether you avoid this failure, because you won't. it's whether you let it harden or shame you into inaction, or whether you learn from it; whether you choose to persevere.

Still plenty of time to enter to win a gift certificate to Bead Eclectic!

Today I am taking a class through New Horizons. Today's class, Adobe Acrobat 9. Tomorrow's class, Powerpoint 2010 Level 1. Exciting stuff. I love these classes. Though, I took all 3 levels of Word 2010, and went back to work to practice what I learned. I was making a form, and wanted to do other things that the class never taught, so I had to go out online and find out how to do it myself. Also, this is Adobe 9, I have Adobe X on my all my computers now, they are way behind

The first hour or so is always so boring. Every teacher goes through the same stuff about working with the Elluminate program. Also, a lot of what they teach, is pretty basic stuff. Every once in a while, I learn a new trick but yea.

At least I have lots of time for blogging today! Happy Wednesday Everyone! Half way through the week!

Ferrero Rocher

Still plenty of time to enter to win a gift certificate to Bead Eclectic!

According to my calendar, today is Mother’s Day in pretty much South America. I found a recipe for Ferrero Rocher cupcakes, so thought this would be a perfect opportunity to make them.

I first attempted these Sunday night, and they were a disaster. I used this recipe to being with and it wasn’t pretty.

So I tried again last night. This time I used just a chocolate cupcake recipe with a dash of hazelnut syrup. The original recipe called for hazelnut extract, which could only be found online and I didn’t want to wait for it to get here. I was at World Market and saw Hazelnut Syrup and decided to give it a try. I used the sugar free syrup, no Calories! Winning.

Chocolate Cupcakes
Ingredients

1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons butter, softened
1 1/2 cups white sugar
2 eggs
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup milk
Dash of hazelnut syrup

    Directions

    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a muffin pan with paper or foil liners. Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cocoa and salt. Set aside.

    2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well with each addition, then stir in the vanilla. Add the flour mixture alternately with the milk. Add dash of hazelnut syrup; beat well. Fill the muffin cups 3/4 full.

    3. Bake for 15 to 17 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean. Frost with your favorite frosting when cool.

Once the cupcakes were cool, I cut a cone out of the top and filled with Nutella.

The Chocolate Hazelnut Ganache Recipe

1/2 c heavy cream
8 oz good semi-sweet chocolate chunks
2 T light corn syrup
2 t hazelnut syrup

Heat the cream on the stove until it boils. Pour over the chocolate and stir to melt, adding the corn syrup and hazelnut syrup.

I drizzled the ganache over the cupcakes and sprinkled hazelnut pieces on top. Delicious!

Pretty Little Liars

Don’t Forget to enter my giveaway so you could win a gift certificate to Bead Eclectic!

I remember going to the movies a while ago and there was a commercial for a new show, Pretty Little Liars. It looked really good. I don’t have cable and I forgot to look for it on Hulu. I tried watching it one day when I was home from work sick, but all I could do was sleep.

pretty-little-liars-300x300

So eventually though, I was able to watch the show and fell in love with it. When the first season ended, I needed more, so I read the books. Yesterday, I finished the last one in the series so far. The next one comes out the day before my birthday. I can’t wait to read it. Once, I start these books I can not put it down. There are so many twists you finish a chapter and have to find out what happens next.

Of course the books are way better than the show. Though there are some aspects of the show that are better. I like that certain people in the show are still alive, when they died in the book.

Now that I’ve finished the series, I need suggestions for what to read next.
What books would you recommend I read?

commitment1

Losers make promises they often break. Winners make commitments they always keep.

If you make the unconditional commitment to reach your most important goals, if the strength of your decision is sufficient, you will find the way and the power to achieve your goals.

if you don't make a total commitment to whatever you're doing, then you start looking to bail out the first time the boat starts leaking. it's tough enough getting that boat to shore with everybody rowing, let alone when a guy stands up and starts putting his jacket on.

There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when circumstance permit. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results.

There are only two options regarding commitment. You're either in or out. There's no such thing as a life in-between. ~ Pat Riley

I thought commitment would be a good theme this week as it is something I am struggling with right now. I haven’t been to the gym this week. And I really need to make a commitment to working out and eating better if I ever want to lose weight. I had told myself I was going to make May a great month and go to the gym all the time, so far hasn’t happened at all. So I really need to re-commit myself to the gym.

How To Pick a Wine

Enter to win a gift certificate to Bead Eclectic’s  Etsy Shop!

This weekend I learned a lot about choosing a good wine. I’m sure most people have heard to Swirl, Smell, and Sip the wine to fully experience it. The problem with this, you have to have the wine already purchased and opened to do this.

This weekend, I had a friend over and so picked up some wine. Not really knowing anything about wine, other than I like it sweet, and she likes dry.

So, I wandered around the liquor store looking for some good stuff. I picked up these:

little penguin

cupcake-chardonnay-2007

I figured I would like these, but wanted to make sure she had something she would enjoy too. An employee asked me if I needed help. So I said yes, I don’t really know anything about wine and to help me find a good wine. I told him I picked the one because it has a penguin on it. And then asked “That’s a good way to pick a wine right? If it has a penguin on it it must be good right.” He hesitated, “Well, some of the best wines have simple labels.” Then I think it sunk in what I said and he laughed at me, because obviously I was completely insane I knew way more about wine than he could ever hope to.

I gotta say, it worked for me. The cupcake wine was the best ever. I can’t wait to try more from this vineyard, but first I have to forget this previous weekend find the right occasion. I picked the penguin wine, cause a while back the zoo had a Pints for Penguins event we wanted to go to, but couldn’t so this was the closest we could get to drinking with penguins.

Later, we picked up some Monkey Bay and Black Swan. I haven’t tried these yet, but monkeys are pretty amazing and so is Natalie Portman, so I’m sure they will be great.

So as probably everybody knows, today is Earth Day. Earth Day was started 41 years ago.
While it’s important to help the environment, it’s something that should be done everyday of the year. Like using a reusable mug everyday instead of only today to get your free Starbucks.

EarthDay

Our city, picks up the recycling every two weeks. It’s so nice to not have to worry about dragging recyclables to a center and sorting them.
I saw on Facebook, an event to use a water bottle repeatedly instead of buying a new bottle every time. I use the same water bottle at the gym, until I dropped and broke my last one. I use a plastic cup from QT for water at work, instead of the paper cups on the water cooler.
I reuse plastic sandwich bags when possible.
I try to take canvas bags to the store, sadly a lot of trips are unplanned, so I don’t have bags with me, though I do have some in my trunk now for the next time.

Here are some other things you can do to help.

What do you do to help the Earth?

Calm Down

So, I have decided there will be two winners for my giveaway! So go enter! You’re odds just improved! This could be yours:

DSC07525.ARW

keep-calm-and-carry-on

So as I lay in bed last night, I got thinking about what a friend told me. She said I need to calm down. She told me this after telling her all the crafty ideas I have and want to complete.

Last night I realized she was right. I get an idea and get really excited about it. I love making jewelry, and spend at least $60 each time I order supplies. I got the idea to make a dress for my friend’s wedding, since it’s at Ren Fest. Since I’ve never sewed that much I decided I needed to start smaller with shirts and skirts. This weekend I bought about 15 patterns and some fabric. Though the patterns were only $.99, no way I would have spent $20 for a pattern.

At the end of last week I was exhausted. And I realized I was pushing myself too hard at the gym. I ran three days in a row, had yoga on Thursday, so when I wanted to run again Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, I was just too worn out. Every training schedule I’ve seen says to run every other day. So I’m changing to that, they will be the days I do strength training. And walk longer after running, before going to strength training. I did this last night, and already noticed a difference.

So really I just need to realize, I’m not superwoman.
